Center Valley, PA (October 24, 2014) – Sophomore
Alex Peek snuck a shot inside the near post with 17 seconds left and freshman
Joey Malvestuto scored 3:14 into the first overtime leading the DeSales University men's soccer team to an incredible 2-1 overtime win over previously unbeaten Eastern University on Saturday afternoon.
Eastern (12-3, 5-1 Freedom) entered the game ranked seventh in the region and was unbeaten in Freedom Conference play.
After a scoreless first-half EU took a 1-0 lead in the 80
th minute when
Hunter Rosenberg bent in a gorgeous shot inside the far post from about 20 yards out.
EU seemed destined to stay unbeaten and clinch the #1 seed in the Freedom Conference Tournament until the final minute of play. After a throw-in by the Bulldogs was kicked across the end line by Eastern giving DSU a corner kick, the Bulldog's Peek raced from across the field to take the kick as he usually does.
But with time running out, sophomore
Wes Frebel waved him off and took it himself but Peek had already started over that side, so Frebel kicked it to Peek at the top of the box and Peek, unmarked let loose on a shot that had very little room to sneak thru on the near post but it slid under a diving keeper and past the defender on the post for Peek's third goal of the year and the tying marker to send the game into overtime.
In the first OT entering the 94
th minute it was again Frebel who sent a cross into the box just in front of the keeper who came off his line to intercept the strike but bobbled the ball and after saving Malvestuto's first attempt he couldn't stop the second as the Bulldogs bench emptied onto the field to celebrate.
Eastern controlled play most of the game out-shooting DeSales, 24-10 and holding a 9-5 edge in corner kicks. Seniors
Damien Romaine and
Colin Sulpizio each made three saves as Romaine finished the game after Sulpizio left with an injury late in the first-half.
DeSales will conclude its season next Saturday when they host Misericordia University, who is now tied with Eastern University in first place in the Freedom Conference, beginning at Noon.
