Reading, PA (December 10, 2014) – Sophomore
Ryan Callahan scored a career-high 22 points and the Bulldogs used a 24-5 run mid-way thru the second-half blowing open a close game en route to an 80-62 win over PSU-Berks in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.
Callahan shot 9-for-11 from the field and added a team-high six rebounds. Junior
Cody Deal added 17 points, 14 of which came in the second-half, sophomore
Kuity Slanger totaled 13 points and six assists, and sophomore
Brian Laird also reached double digits with 10 points to lead the Bulldogs (7-2 overall).
Berks (0-7) got a game-high 24 points from
Christian Burggraf, 11 points from
Dameon Nixon, and 10 points off the bench from
Baba Waples in the loss.
DSU held a narrow 47-46 lead at the 12:33 mark of the second-half when Slanger started the game-clinching 24-5 run with seven straight points. After a bucket from freshman
Aaron Burton, Deal went to work scoring 11 of the next 14 points as the Bulldogs pushed a one-point lead into a 20-point advantage, 71-51, with 4:38 remaining and never looked back.
DeSales shot 52.6 percent from the field for the game as compared to just 40.7 percent shooting for the Nittany Lions.
After DSU scored the first six points of the game Berks controlled play for much of the first-half opening as much as an eight point lead before the Bulldogs closed to within three points at the break.
DeSales scored the first three points of the second-half to tie the game as the two teams went back and forth over the next several minutes before DSU put the contest away with its game-clinching spurt.
In addition to the scoring leaders for DeSales, Burton came off the bench to add eight points as part of a 23-point effort from the Bulldogs bench.
DSU visits local rival Muhlenberg College this Saturday, December 13th, for their final game before Christmas break.
