Purchase, NY (February 12, 2014) – Senior
Sondrine Glovas notched her fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points and a career-high 15 rebounds leading the Bulldogs past Manhattanville College, 65-51, and clinching DSU's 17th-straight Freedom Conference playoff berth with the win on Wednesday evening.
The Bulldogs (18-4, 8-3 Freedom), who earlier in the day were ranked #5 in the important NCAA Regional Rankings, clinch their 17th straight Freedom Conference playoff berth in DSU's 17th season in the conference as the Bulldogs have never missed the post-season since joining the conference at the start of the 1997-98 season.
Glovas added four steals to her double-double performance and was joined in double digits by fellow senior
Alexiah Grant with 17 points and freshman
Morgan McCollian with 10 points off the bench. Senior
Megan Gallagher added seven points and a team-high 16 rebounds, while freshman
Nicole Umbenhauer had another strong effort off the pine with seven points.
Bri Pabon finished with 16 points,
Alyson Caiazzo recorded a double-double with 14 points and 19 rebounds, and
Ashley Franklin added 11 points in the loss.
DSU never trailed on Wednesday scoring the first seven points of the game and racing out to a 17-2 lead over the first 8:47 of the game. The first-half lead grew to as many as 18 points (28-10) on a three from Glovas before the Bulldogs settled for a 12-point advantage at the break (36-24).
Glovas led the first-half charge with 15 of her 22 points as DeSales shot 39.5 percent from the field in the opening half.
The Valiants (9-13, 4-7 Freedom) were the ones to start quickly in the second-half quickly cutting the 12-point halftime deficit down to just one point with a 13-2 run over the first 4:50 of the half.
The two teams went scoreless over the next two minutes before Glovas ended the drought with consecutive buckets pushing the lead back up to five points (42-37).
It was a four-point game (46-42) with 9:08 to go when DSU used a 6-0 run on a lay-up from McCollian and two lay-ups from Grant to push the lead back up to double digits (52-42) with 7:28 left to play.
Pabon hit a three-pointer to make it a second-point-game but a three-point play from Gallagher started a quick 6-0 spurt over the next two minutes giving DSU a 58-45 lead and putting the game out of reach of the Valiants.
DSU finished the game shooting 37.5 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Valiants, 53-44. The Bulldogs bench was the difference, out-scoring MVC, 19-0, for the game.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they return home to face the undefeated and eighth ranked FDU-Florham Devils on senior day beginning at 1:00 pm.
