Second-Half Spurt Leads Bulldogs Past Aggies, 74-51

Senior Alexiah finished just two points shy of her season-high with 27 points in the win over Delaware Valley College on Thursday.

Center Valley, PA (February 6, 2014) – The Bulldogs used a 22-2 run mid-way thru the second-half, extending a four-point lead into a 24-point lead with 8:57 left to play leading the DeSales University women's basketball team past Delaware Valley College, 74-51, in Freedom Conference action on Thursday evening in Billera Hall.

Once again it was the senior trio of Alexiah Grant, Sondrine Glovas, and Megan Gallagher who combined to score 53 of the 74 points in the win.  Grant led the way with a game-high 27, while both Glovas and Gallagher netted 13 points.  Gallagher recorded her third straight double-double and the sixth of the season, adding a game-high 11 rebounds.

Sophomore Gabby Scott also played well dishing out a career-high 10 assists, while committing just one turnover, junior Alex Suk finished with six points and eight boards, and freshman Nicole Umbenhauer had a strong game off the bench with nine points and six rebounds.

The Aggies got 14 points, nine rebounds, and four steals from Eireann Anastasi in the loss.  Brittany Wood also reached double figures with 12 points.  Brenna Coll finished two points and one rebound shy of a double-double.

The game clinching run started at the 15:40 mark after DVC (12-8, 5-4 Freedom) trimmed the margin down to four points on a jumper from Shannon Barlow.  DSU scored the next 14 points as the run concluded just under seven minutes later with DSU (16-4, 6-3 Freedom) leading, 55-31.  Grant led the spurt with 12 points and Glovas added eight.

The lead grew to as many as 28 points once as the Bulldogs hit on 48.7 percent of their shots in the second-half and dominated the glass out-rebounding the Aggies, 49-3, for the game.

The first-half was a much tighter affair featuring four ties and seven lead changes.  The Aggies led by as many as five points (18-13) after a three from Wood before DSU used an 8-2 run to take a 21-20 lead with 4:11 to go that saw Grant score seven of the eight points.  Umbenhauer helped the Bulldogs finish the half strong scoring all four of her points over the final 3:31 to help DeSales take a 26-22 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs dominated the paint all game long out-scoring the Aggies, 34-12, inside the lane.  DSU also held a 16-2 edge in fast break points for the game.

DeSales returns to the hardwood on Saturday when they host Misericordia University in another Freedom Conference game beginning at 1:00 pm.
