Center Valley, PA (February 8, 2014) – Senior
Sondrine Glovas hit two free throws with 14 seconds left breaking a tie at 67 and freshman
Nicole Umbenhauer sealed the win with two more charity tosses with one tick left as the Bulldogs survived a terrific effort from Misericordia University in a 71-68 win on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.
Glovas finished with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks to lead DeSales (17-4, 7-3 Freedom). Senior
Alexiah Grant totaled a game-high 23 points and Umbenhauer had her second straight strong game off the bench with a season-high tying nine points in just 10 minutes of action.
Freshman
Justine Seely was outstanding for the Cougars (7-13, 3-7 Freedom), who entered the game having lost three straight but had upset on their mind from the very start. She finished the game with 15 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, and six blocks.
Sam Baro added 15 points,
Shannon Croasdale totaled 10 points off the bench, and senior
Hannah Seely finished with eight points and 10 rebounds in just 18 minutes of action due to foul trouble all game long.
Misericordia was up to the challenge the entire afternoon as the game featured six ties and nine lead changes. A tie at 55 was broken by Umbenhauer at the 7:29 mark on a three-point play before the Cougars scored six straight points to take a 61-58 lead with 5:43 to go.
The Bulldogs responded with an 8-2 run featuring lay-ups from Glovas, Grant, junior
Alex Suk, and senior
Megan Gallagher to put DSU up 66-63 with 1:31 to play, but MU's
Katie Drayton drove thru the lane and hit an off-balance lay-up to pull the Cougars within one with 51 seconds left.
On the ensuing inbounds pass, Croasdale stripped sophomore
Gabby Scott of the ball and called timeout as she was falling out of bounds giving possession back to Misericordia.
J. Seely missed a lay-up and Gallagher was there for the board as she was fouled immediately but could only connect on 1-of-2 from the free throw line. MU worked the ball down low to J. Seely who turned and hit a short jumper to tie the game at 67 with 29 seconds left.
DSU called timeout and Glovas got the ball on the left wing, drove to the baseline and was fouled on the lay-up attempt where she went to the line and knocked down both free throws.
The Cougars called timeout this time and out of the timeout a Croasdale jumper at the foul line was long but J. Seely leaped over Suk for the rebound and while coming down with the board was fouled but also landing awkwardly and was forced to leave the game with an injury. Kelsey Wantz entered the game for J. Seely, seeing her first action of the game, and only connected on the second free throw.
DSU inbounded the ball to Umbenhauer who calmly knocked down both charity tosses with 0.8 seconds left and Grant stole the ensuing inbounds pass to preserve the win.
MU started the game strong opening up a 15-8 lead over the first 10 minutes of the game before DSU countered with a 12-2 run to take a 20-17 lead thanks in part to two Glovas treys during the run. The Cougars re-took a 27-25 lead with 1:57 to go in the half but the Bulldogs finished the half out-scoring MU 7-2 and took a three-point lead into the locker room on a three from freshman
Megan Baird with 22 seconds left.
DSU maintained its lead thru the first five minutes of the half before a three from S. Baro gave the Cougars a 44-42 advantage that grew to as many as five points before DSU battled back to tie the game at 55 setting up the final stages of the game.
Both teams shot well with DSU hitting 41.0 percent from the field and the Cougars connecting on 43.1 percent. MU enjoyed a healthy, 44-32, edge on the glass, although the Bulldogs had a 17-6 edge in second-chance points. DSU also forced 23 Misericordia turnovers in the win and committed just 14 itself.
DSU returns to action on Wednesday, February 12th when they take to the road, traveling to Manhattanville College for another Freedom Conference game beginning at 6:00 pm. The Bulldogs are currently deadlocked with Eastern University in a tie for second in the Freedom Conference standings with four games left in the regular season.
