San Antonio, TX (March 14, 2014) – The Bulldogs returned home from their spring trip out to San Antonio, TX splitting a doubleheader with Cardinal Stritch University as two freshman hurlers led the way in a 2-1 win on the final day of the week long trip out West.
Below is a brief recap of DSU's final four games on the trip. The Bulldogs finished the trip with a 1-6 record. DSU was led by senior
Mark Westdyk at the plate hitting a team-high .417 with eight RBIs. Fellow senior
Brian Mauro hit .350 with a .552 on-base percentage, totaling a team-high four doubles and being walked eight times.
On the bump, sophomore
Steven Wallace finished with a team-low 1.23 ERA, while freshman
Andrew Schuler recorded DSU's lone win and fellow freshman
Cameron Hoos recorded a save and a 1.93 ERA in three relief appearances during the week. Sophomore
Chris Polaski also pitched well in one start allowing just one earned run over 5.2 innings pitched.
Texas Lutheran – 7, DeSales – 6
The Bulldogs scored five times in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Mauro, RBI single from sophomore
Alec Hardy, RBI single from freshman
Mike Kacergis, two walks, and two TLU errors to take a 5-1 lead, but Texas Lutheran scored three times in the seventh and once more in the eighth to tie the game at six before winning it in the bottom of the 11th inning. Mauro and Kacergis each had two hits in the loss, while Hoos was the hard luck loser tossing 2.1 innings allowing just one run.
Trinity – 5, DeSales – 0
Trinity broke open a close game with four runs in the fifth inning and surrendered just four hits to the Bulldogs in the loss. Westdyk had two of the Bulldogs four hits. Junior
Trevor Connors took the loss allowing four earned runs over 5.1 innings pitched.
Cardinal Stritch – 12, DeSales – 3
CSU scored nine runs over the first two innings as Bulldog pitching hit three batters and walked three more over the first two frames leading to most of the damage. Hardy hit a two-run home run in the third inning and senior
Mark Fuse had two hits to lead the way. Junior
Eric Dillard took the loss allowing eight runs over one inning pitched.
DeSales – 2, Cardinal Stritch – 1
The Bulldogs scored a solo run in the first and fifth inning taking advantage of two CSU errors in the first and one in the fifth on an RBI single from freshman
Tommy DePaul. Schuler earned the win tossing five shutout innings allowing just four hits and striking out three. Hoos pitched the final 1.1 innings allowing one hit to earn his first career save.
The Bulldogs had all three games postponed this weekend vs. Misericordia and is currently scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March 18th when they travel to Kean University for a non-conference game beginning at 3:00 pm.
