Charles Dennis went 6-for-7 with five runs scored, five RBIs, and two home runs as the DeSales University baseball team scored runs in six of the nine innings en route to a 17-6 win over King's College in the first Freedom Conference game of the season on Friday afternoon.
DSU (2-7, 1-0 Freedom) trailed 1-0 early when King's (1-6, 0-3 Freedom) scored a single run in the first inning but quickly rallied with three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Freshman
Tommy DePaul had an RBI bunt single with two outs and the Bulldogs pushed across two more runs on two Monarch errors.
The Bulldogs led 4-1 after two and a half innings after an RBI single from senior
Mark Fuse in the third before King's took advantage of some DSU miscues scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning to lead 5-4 thanks in part to two Bulldog errors in the inning leading to two unearned runs.
From there it was all Bulldogs as they scored twice in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead, four times in the sixth to lead 10-5, twice in the seventh to hold a 12-6 advantage, and provided the 17-6 final margin with five runs in the ninth. Overall King's committed 10 errors in the game leading to 12 unearned runs scored by the Bulldogs.
Dennis hit two-run home runs in both the seventh and ninth innings to finish with five RBI's in the game. His six hits and five runs tie the school-record for hits and runs in a game. DePaul finished with three hits and three RBIs, Fuse had three hits and scored four runs, and junior
Drew Borger scored twice. Eleven different players had hits in the game. Senior
Brian Mauro reached base all seven times he came to the plate.
Senior
Dan Gayeski earned the win pitching 3.2 strong innings of relief allowing just three hits and striking out three. Sophomore
Chris Zampini earned a three inning save allowing just three hits and also striking out three.
These two teams are back it tomorrow for games two and three of the weekend series at Butz Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
