Center Valley, PA (March 23, 2014) – Senior
Mark Fuse had a walk-off bloop single in the first game and a bases loaded bunt single in the second game leading the DeSales University baseball team back-to-back extra inning walk-off wins over Misericordia University, 7-6 and 9-8, on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Butz Field.
In the first game, MU (7-6, 3-2 Freedom) jumped out early scoring five runs over the first two innings on just one hit, a bunt single to third base, taking advantage of two Bulldog errors and four Bulldog walks to lead 5-0.
DSU (6-7, 5-0 Freedom) chipped away at the deficit scoring twice in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from sophomore
Carrington Santana and a bases loaded walk from junior
Nick Fischer. The Bulldogs got two more runs back, cutting the deficit down to one in the bottom of the fourth inning when senior
Charles Dennis scored on a wild pitch and Fischer knocked in junior
Drew Borger with a two-out single.
DeSales then took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Santana singled and later scored on an RBI double from Fischer who scored four batters later on a bunt single from Fuse with two outs.
MU tied the game in the top of the seventh with a two-out bloop hit just over the shortstop's head and after DSU worked around a lead-off walk in the top of the eighth inning, sophomore
Alec Hardy scored on a bloop into shallow right-field with two outs from Fuse giving DSU the 7-6 win in eight innings.
Senior
Tyler Reyes earned the win pitching one inning of perfect relief retiring all three batters he faced. Sophomore
Steven Wallace pitched 6.1 solid innings allowing just three hits and two earned runs. Fuse finished with three hits and two RBIs, while Santana, Fischer, and Hardy each had two hits. Fischer knocked in three runs in the game one win.
In the second game it was all Bulldogs early as they answered one run by the Cougars in the top of the first with six runs all coming with two outs including doubles from senior
Mark Westdyk, Hardy, freshman
Michael Hronich, and Dennis.
MU chipped away this time scoring three times in the fourth inning before DSU made it an 8-4 game on another two-out double from Hronich in the bottom of the frame.
The Cougars then took advantage of more Bulldog mistakes in the top of the sixth inning scoring four runs to tie the game eight on three walks, two hit batters, and just one hit. DSU got out of a huge bases loaded one out jam in the top of the seventh when junior
Eric Elmer got MU's
Miles Westrich to line into a inning ending double play.
DSU went in order in the bottom of the seventh and stranded a two-out double in the eighth before winning it in the ninth. Fischer walked to lead-off the inning and freshman
Tyler Sweeney pinch-ran for Fischer. Westdyk sacrificed Sweeney to second and Hardy was intentionally walked. Hronich then drew a walk to load the bases and with the count 1-0, Fuse dropped a bunt down the first base line with Sweeney breaking for the plate, scoring without a throw as the Bulldogs bench cleared.
Elmer earned the win pitching 2.2 outstanding innings without allowing a hit and stranding the lone base-runner who reached via an error. Westdyk had two hits and scored twice, Hardy knocked in two runs, Hronich had two doubles and three RBIs, Dennis knocked in two run, and Fuse had two hits in the game two win. All nine starters had at least one hit in game two.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when they host Montclair State University in a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
