Baseball Opens Spring Trip with Three Losses

Senior Mark Westdyk is batting .667 with eight RBIs in the Bulldogs first three games out west.

San Antonio, TX (March 5, 2014) – The DeSales University baseball team opened its Spring Trip out to San Antonio, TX with three losses to begin the trip falling to U. of Houston-Victoria, 15-14, Mary-Hardin Baylor, 6-3, and Schreiner University, 4-0.

Below is a brief recap of each game thus far:

Game One
Houston-Victoria – 15, DeSales – 14

UHV led 6-3 thru five innings before the flood gates opened.  Houston-Victoria scored nine times in the top of the sixth inning to lead 15-3 before the Bulldogs countered with 11 runs in the bottom of the inning to trail 15-14 before the game was called due to darkness after six innings played.  Senior Mark Westdyk had a tremendous day at the plate going 3-for-4 with seven RBIs and three runs scored including a three-run home run and sophomore Alec Hardy had two hits and three runs scored.  DSU made four errors leading to 10 unearned runs allowed in the loss.

Game Two
Mary-Hardin Baylor – 6, DeSales – 3

UMHB scored in each of the first three innings but the Bulldogs countered with one in the second and two in third to tie the game at three including an RBI double by senior Westdyk and an RBI single from Hardy.  MHB then scored three times in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead and DSU left six men on-base over the final five innings in the loss.  Freshman Tyler Cooperman took the loss.  Senior Dan Gayeski pitched well allowing just two hits over two innings in relief.  Westdyk and sophomore Evan Fraser each had three hits.

Game Three
Scheiner – 4, DeSales – 0

This game was a pitcher's duel for the first seven innings as the game entered the eighth in a scoreless tie before Schreiner scored four runs with two outs and DSU managed just six hits in the game.  Sophomore Steven Wallace was outstanding on the bump allowing just three hits over 7.1 innings pitched, striking out eight, but did suffer the loss.  Senior Brian Mauro and Westdyk each had two hits.

DSU returns to action on Wednesday taking on Texas Lutheran University beginning at 3:00 pm eastern.
