Alec Hardy laced a two-out pinch-hit double with the bases loaded capping off a six-run seventh inning and the Bulldogs bullpen closed the door over the final two innings leading the DeSales University baseball team to a 10-8 win over Susquehanna University on Thursday afternoon at Butz Field.
SU (17-7) led early scoring solo runs in each of the first two innings before DSU (11-10) scored once in the fourth on an RBI groundout from senior
Charles Dennis and three times in the fifth on a two-RBI triple from senior
Mark Westdyk and a sacrifice fly from junior
Jonathan Bujtas to lead 4-2 thru five innings.
The Crusaders got one run back in the sixth inning and took an 8-4 lead with five runs in the top of the seventh inning for DeSales rallied.
Freshman
Tyler Sweeney started the seventh with a double before freshman
Tommy DePaul legged out an infield single and then stole second base. Junior
Nick Fischer plated both Sweeney and DePaul with a single up the middle and later scored when sophomore
Carrington Santana was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
After Dennis popped out to second base recording the second out, head coach
Tim Neiman sent up Hardy as a pinch-hitter and he came thru with a bases clearing double off the left-center field wall plating Westdyk, senior
Mark Fuse, and Santana.
Sophomore
Chris Zampini and freshman
Cameron Hoos did the rest stranding one base-runner in both the eighth and ninth innings as Hoos earned his fifth save of the season in the win. Sophomore
Evan Fraser earned the win in relief. Freshman
Tyler Cooperman pitched well in a no-decision allowing just three runs over 5.2 innings pitched in his first collegiate start on the bump.
DePaul and Fuse each had three hits, Sweeney had two hits and scored twice, and Westdyk had two hits to lead the offensive attack.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to return to action tomorrow when they travel to FDU-Florham for a Freedom Conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
