Center Valley, PA (April 14, 2014) – Senior Mark Westdyk hit a line drive single to left field with the bases loaded in the ninth scoring freshman Tommy DePaul leading the DeSales University baseball team to an 11-10 win over Rutgers-Camden in non-conference action on a windy Monday afternoon at Butz Field.

The win is the fourth straight for DeSales who improves to 15-12 overall, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 18-8-1 overall.  Senior Dan Gayeski earns the win relief to improve to 2-0 on the year, while Ron Reagan falls to 5-2 on the season.  DSU led nearly the entire game until the Scarlet Raptors tied the game in the top of the ninth after also scoring eight runs in the top of the eighth inning.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when junior Nick Fischer tripled home two runs and after Camden hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the third inning to lead 3-2, DSU answered with three runs of its own in the second to lead 5-3 after two frames.  DePaul had a two-RBI single and senior Brian Mauro knocked in a run in the second with a single.

DeSales added two more runs in the fourth another RBI single from Mauro and a sacrifice fly from Westdyk and took a 10-3 lead in the fifth on a two RBI single from Fischer and an RBI base hit from junior Drew Borger.

DSU still led 10-3 entering the eighth inning before Adrian Gonzalez hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot, to cut the margin down to 10-6.  Camden loaded the bases with two outs after the HR and freshman Cameron Hoos entered the game and was able to get a fly ball to left field but the ball was missed allowing three runs to score before the final out of the inning was recorded.

In the ninth, Rutgers scored one run on a one-out hit and had the go-ahead run at third with less than two outs before Gayeski got a strikeout and fly out to centerfield to end the threat.

In the bottom of the ninth, DePaul singled to centerfield with one out and moved to second when Mauro was hit by a pitch.  Fischer walked to load the bases and Westdyk was able to hit a line drive to left field with two strikes on him sending DePaul home with the winning run.

DePaul and Mauro each had three hits in the win, while Fischer finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs.  Borger also had two hits and scored twice as did sophomore Alec Hardy, freshman Jesse Smoot, and freshman Tyler Sweeney.  Junior Eric Dillard pitched well despite receiving a no-decision lasting seven innings allowing just seven hits and three runs.

The Bulldogs are off tomorrow and will return to action on Wednesday, April 16th when they host local rival Moravian College beginning at 4:00 pm.
