Bulldogs Falter Late in 9-4 Loss at Rutgers-Newark

Newark, NJ (April 2, 2014) – Rutgers-Newark scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning breaking open a close game en route to a 9-4 win over the DeSales University baseball team in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium.
 
Sophomore Chris Zampini took the loss for the Bulldogs (0-1) allowing one run over 2/3 innings pitched in relief.  Junior Trevor Connors started and lasted 4 1/3 allowing four runs on just three hits but six walks.  Senior Tyler Reyes pitched well out of the bullpen giving DSU 1 1/3 scoreless.
 
DSU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior Mark Westdyk singled home sophomore Carrington Santana and freshman Tommy DePaul who had singled and walked to lead off the game.
 
Rutgers (6-12) got one run back in the bottom of the inning but the Bulldogs (7-9) took a 4-1 lead with two more runs in the third inning as the game moved into the fifth inning after a scoreless fourth frame.  In the third Santana and DePaul again set the table with a walk and hit by a pitch and both scored on an error by the Newark second baseman on a ball of the bat of Westdyk.
 
RNU took control from there tying the game in the fifth with three runs after four straight walks from Connors with one out in which three came around to score and took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on a walk, stolen base, groundout, and wild pitch.
 
Newark got its insurance runs in the eighth stringing together five hits, four of which came with two outs, to complete the comeback.
 
DePaul and Santana each scored twice to lead the offensive attack that featured just five hits for the game.
 
The Bulldogs are off on Thursday and will return to action on Friday when they host Manhattanville College in a Freedom Conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
