19-Hit Attack Leads DSU past Aggies 13-5 in Series Opener

Doylestown, PA (April 25, 2014) – Freshman Tommy DePaul went 5-for-6 and senior Brian Mauro was 4-for-6 accounting for 11 of DSU's 19 hits as the Bulldogs took game one of the weekend series with Delaware Valley College, 13-5, on Friday afternoon in Freedom Conference action.
 
The Bulldogs (21-13) have now won five straight and move two wins away tomorrow vs. Delaware Valley from clinching the #1 seed in next week's Freedom Conference Baseball Tournament.
 
DSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when freshman Tyler Sweeney stole home on a double steal with DePaul and then the Bulldogs broke it open in the third inning.
 
DeSales scored five runs in the top of the third on seven hits including an RBI single from Mauro, a sacrifice fly from junior Nick Fischer, an RBI single from sophomore Alec Hardy, and a two-RBI single from senior Charles Dennis.  DVC answered with two runs in the bottom of the third but DSU got them right back in the fourth on an RBI double from Mauro and an RBI single from senior Mark Westdyk.
 
It was an 8-3 game entering the sixth when the Bulldogs scored three times in the sixth an RBI single from Mauro and a two-RBI single from sophomore Carrington Santana and twice more in the seventh on another RBI base hit from Mauro to open up a 13-5 lead and never looked back from there.
 
Sophomore Chris Polaski earned the win, his fourth of the year, allowing just seven hits and two earned runs over five innings, striking out six.  Junior Eric Elmer pitched the final four frames to earn a save allowing just three hits and one earned run, while striking out three.
 
DePaul added four runs scored to his five hits and Mauro had a team-high four RBIs.  Sweeney finished 2-for-6 with three runs scored, Westdyk had two hits and two runs scored, and junior Drew Borger also had two hits as nine different players had hits for DeSales.
 
The second and third games of the weekend series shift to Butz Field tomorrow when the Bulldogs host the Aggies for a Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
