Andrew Schuler tossed a complete-game in game one allowing just one earned run and the Bulldogs exploded for six runs in the fifth inning of game two, earning 7-2 wins in both ends of a Freedom Conference doubleheader vs. Delaware Valley College to clinch the top seed in next weekend's Freedom Conference Baseball Tournament at Butz Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs have now won eight straight games and improve to 23-11 overall and finish the regular season with a 17-4 mark in the Freedom Conference. DSU finishes tied with Misericordia University in first place but own the tiebreaker by virtue of winning of two of three games in the head-to-head season series. FDU-Florham finishes third and Manhattanville College earns the fourth and final playoff spot. The post-season tournament will begin next Friday at Owl's Field in West Lawn, PA.
In the first game on Saturday, Schuler was outstanding pitching in his first game at Butz Field. He improved to 4-0 on the year allowing just five hits and one earned run over seven innings, walking just one and striking out eight. He pitched out of a second and third jam with just one out in the fourth when it was still a scoreless game and the Bulldogs responded offensively scoring twice in the fourth, three times in the fifth, and twice more in the sixth to earn the win.
In the fourth freshman
Mike Kacergis got DSU on the board with an RBI triple plating senior
Charles Dennis. Kacergis then scored one batter later when sophomore
Carrington Santana singled.
In the fifth senior
Mark Westdyk had two-run double to score freshman
Tommy DePaul and senior
Brian Mauro and later scored on an RBI single from Kacergis. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the sixth on RBI groundout from freshman
Tyler Sweeney and an RBI single from DePaul.
Sweeney, DePaul, Kacergis, and Santana all had two hits in the game one win as seven different Bulldogs scored runs in the game.
In the second game, DSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when DePaul walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on another wild pitch.
Junior
Eric Dillard was perfect thru three innings and carried a no-hitter into the fifth before a one-out single broke it up. He pitched out of a jam in the fifth allowing just one run and DSU countered with six runs in the bottom of the inning to break the game open.
In the bottom of the sixth, DSU used five hits and four walks to score six times. DePaul had an RBI single, Mauro doubled home two runs, Westdyk singled home Mauro, junior
Nick Fischer singled home Westdyk and then scored three batters on a bases loaded walk by junior
Drew Borger.
Sweeney and Westdyk each had two hits, while Mauro finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs and now stands just one hit shy of becoming just the third player in team history to record 200 career hits. Dillard earned the win allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings, striking out two.
The Bulldogs will look to make it a perfect 9-0 this week when they travel to Ursinus College tomorrow for a non-conference game beginning at 1:00 pm.
