Schuler Improves to 5-0 as Bulldogs Split Doubleheader at York

Senior Mark Westdyk had three hits and three RBIs at York on Sunday afternoon.

York, PA (May 11, 2014) – Freshman Andrew Schuler improved to 5-0 with six solid innings in game one leading the DeSales University baseball team to a doubleheader split with York College (PA) on Sunday afternoon by scores of 7-3 and 11-9 to finish up the regular season for the Bulldogs.
 
DSU finishes with a 27-16 overall record with the split.
 
In the opener, Schuler was once again solid allowing just one earned run and five hits over six innings, striking out four.  He improved to 5-0 on the year and lowered his ERA to 3.38 on the season.
 
After the Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, DSU scored twice in the third on an RBI single from freshman Tyler Sweeney and an RBI groundout from fellow freshman Tommy DePaul.
 
The Bulldogs added a run in the sixth when senior Brian Mauro doubled to lead off the frame and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly from fellow senior Mark Westdyk.  York got one run back in the bottom of the sixth as the game headed to the ninth with DSU leading 3-2.
 
In the ninth, DeSales scored four times to take a 7-2 lead before settling for a 7-3 game one win.  In the ninth, freshman Mike Kacergis, freshman Tyler Cooperman, Sweeney, and DePaul all had RBI singles.
 
Sweeney, Kacergis, and Cooperman each finished with two hits in the game one win and DePaul led the way with two RBIs.
 
In the second game the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run from Mauro and an RBI single from Westdyk and led 4-1 after two and a half innings before York scored twice in the third, three times in the fourth and fifth, and once more in the sixth and seventh to take an 11-4 lead.
 
DSU fought back with one run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from junior Nick Fischer and scored four times in the ninth before the Spartans were finally able to get the third out to clinch the win.
 
Senior Charles Dennis led the charge in game two going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs.  DePaul and Mauro each scored twice, while Westdyk had two hits.
