DeSales Earns Two Impressive Wins on Day One of MIT Invitational

Cambridge, MA (September 12, 2014) – The DeSales University volleyball team took home two impressive wins on Friday evening at the MIT Invitational, defeating Colby College, 3-1 (25-15, 25-17, 24-26, 29-27) and Springfield College, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 28-26), to run its win streak to five straight and improve season record to 9-2 overall.
 
Both Colby and Springfield were undefeated entering play vs. the Bulldogs on Friday night.  Springfield College had been 5-0 and was receiving votes in the latest AVCA NCAA Division III national poll.
 
In the win over Colby to start the evening, senior Julie Blessing led the offense with 18 kills and a .316 hitting percentage to go along with three blocks.  Freshmen Sienna Heist finished with 13 kills and Logan Wieziolowski added 12 kills.
 
As a team, DSU had 10 blocks led by six from senior Chrissy Banos and four each from Wieziolowski and senior Brooke Horrigan.
 
Defensively, senior Amanda Wallitsch finished with 19 digs and sophomore Laura Greenberg had 10 digs, while sophomore Lisa Wallitsch ran a balanced offense dishing out 45 assists and adding 14 digs.
 
In the second match of the day vs. Springfield, Blessing again led the way with an impressive stat line of 14 kills and 0 errors on 25 attempts for an attack percentage of .560.  Banos added eight kills and Wieziolowski had five kills and three blocks.
 
Four players had double-digit digs including L. Wallitsch and A. Wallitsch with 14 each, freshman Bernadette Wood with 13, and Greenberg with 12.  L. Wallitsch also had 31 assists in the win.
 
The Bulldogs return to MIT tomorrow for day two of the Invitational taking on Bates College and Tufts University.
