Dominating Defense Leads Bulldogs past Wilkes, 56-41

Wilkes-Barre, PA (January 21, 2015) – The DeSales University women's basketball team held Wilkes University to 29.1 percent shooting and 41 points for the game en route to a 56-41 win over the Lady Colonels in Freedom Conference action on Wednesday evening at the Marts Center.

Sophomore Megan Baird led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points, hitting four three's.  Senior Alex Suk and junior Kelly Anthony each fell just short of a double-double with Suk totaling eight points and 12 rebounds and Anthony finishing with nine points and 10 boards.

Freshman Emily Kiersnowski played very well off the bench scoring a season-high nine points.  Sophomore Morgan McCollian added eight points and seven boards and sophomore Nikki Callahan finished with three points, seven rebounds, and five assists along one turnover in the win.

Wilkes was led by Elena Stambone with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-17 shooting and Chelsea Smelas finished with seven points and 11 boards in the loss.

After Wilkes (7-7, 2-3 Freedom) took a 2-0 lead, the Bulldogs (10-6, 4-1 Freedom) scored nine straight points and never trailed the rest of the way.  DSU led by as many as nine points twice in the opening half before the Lady Colonels closed the half on a 9-2 run to cut DSU's lead down to two points (22-20) at the break.

It was a back-and-forth start to the second-half that saw WU tie the game at 30 with 15:35 to go.  Kiersnowski ignited a quick 7-0 spurt that put DSU ahead 37-30 and a 9-0 run a few minutes later gave DeSales a 15-point lead (50-35) with 5:13 to play and the Bulldogs cruised from there.

DSU shook off a tough first-half shooting performance to hit 40.0 percent from the field in the second-half.  The Bulldogs dominated the glass out-rebounding Wilkes, 52-39, for the game.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday when they host Delaware Valley College in another critical Freedom Conference game beginning at 2:00 pm in Billera Hall.
