Center Valley, PA (January 24, 2015) – Junior
Eireann Anastasi hit a short pull-up jumper with 2.1 seconds left giving Delaware Valley College a 67-65 win over the DeSales University women's basketball team in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.
DSU (10-7, 4-2 Freedom) trailed by four with 55 seconds left when sophomore
Morgan McCollian hit two free throws to pull DeSales within two with 33 ticks left. After Anastasi missed two free throws on the other end with 25 seconds left sophomore
Megan Baird found McCollian underneath and her lay-up was good tying the score with 16 ticks left.
Delaware Valley (8-9, 3-3 Freedom) called timeout with 10 seconds left and out of the timeout, Anastasi dribbled around a high screen and pulled up from about seven feet as her short jumper banked home and a last second heave from Baird was well short as the buzzer sounded.
Baird led the Bulldogs with a game-high 17 points and also pulled down six boards, McCollian finished with 16 points and grabbed nine boards, while senior
Mikelyn Mackavage and junior
Kelly Anthony each added eight points. Anthony also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
DVC saw all five starters score in double digits including senior
Brenna Coll with 14 points,
Agatha Drozd and
Brittany Wood with 12 each, and Anastasi and
Shannon Barlow with 11 each.
The Aggies were in control early taking an 18-8 lead and continue to lead by eight (25-17) before the Bulldogs finished the half on a 19-4 run to take a 36-29 lead into the locker room. Baird led the charge with 12 points and Mackavage added a three at the end of the half.
DelVal chipped away at the Bulldog lead early in the half and after another three from Mackavage made it a seven-point game, the Aggies embarked on a 9-0 run to take a 49-47 lead. The game went back-and-forth over the next several minutes and was tied at 59 with 3:46 left to play.
Baird missed a front end of a one-and-one and DSU was called for over the back on the miss sending the Aggies to the line where they hit both freebies.
Two free throws from McCollian tied the score and with DeSales trailing by one sophomore
Nikki Callahan was fouled with 1:47 left but she missed the front end of a one-and-one as well and three free throws over the next two possessions for the Aggies set up the final moments.
DSU shot just 31.8 percent for the game. DVC rebounded from a poor shooting first-half to hit 50.0 percent in the second-half and 42.0 percent for the game. DSU dominated the glass out-rebounding the Aggies, 51-33, leading to 18 second-chance points.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Wednesday, January 28
th when they travel down to Eastern University for another important Freedom Conference tilt beginning at 6:00 pm.
