Center Valley, PA (October 10, 2015) – The DeSales University men's soccer team saw a late comeback fall short falling to FDU-Florham, 2-1, in MAC Freedom action on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
DSU (5-8, 0-2 MAC Freedom) had two golden opportunities early in this game to take a two-goal lead that eventually sealed the Bulldogs fate. Freshman
Michael Kirby intercepted a pass back to the Devil (6-5-1, 2-0 MAC Freedom) goalkeeper just 30 seconds into the game and chipped a shot over the keeper's head towards the net that seemed all but in but the chip was just a hair too high as the ball caromed off the crossbar.
Later in the first-half the Bulldogs drew a foul in the box and Kirby was sent to take the penalty kick but FDU's
Nick Mihalik guessed right and made a terrific save keeping the game scoreless. The game remained scoreless into the half.
FDU struck first in the second-half as
Andrew Ruane took a pass at the top of the box from
Jose Guardado, turned and beat the Bulldogs' keeper for his sixth marker of the year. The Devils got what turned out to be a much needed insurance goal in the 79
th minute, drawing a foul in the box and
AJ Carnevale scored on the PK making it a two-goal game.
DSU pushed up on offense and got within a goal with 1:20 left on the clock as junior
Alex Peek knocked home the rebound of a saved shot off the foot of freshman
Justin Habick, but the Bulldogs were unable to get the tying marker of the final 80 seconds.
FDU enjoyed a 19-10 advantage in shots, while the Bulldogs had one more corner kick (6-5) in the game. Sophomore
Dan Sulpizio was excellent in goal making seven saves.\
The Bulldogs will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, October 14
th when they travel to Manhattanville College beginning at 2:30 pm.
