Roche’s Second OT Header Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

Center Valley, PA (October 24, 2015) – Senior Patrick Roche headed home a centering pass from freshman Michael Kirby with 4:44 left in the second overtime lifting the DeSales University men's soccer team past Wilkes University, 2-1, in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon.

The win (7-8-2, 2-2-2 MAC Freedom) keeps DSU's playoff hopes alive as the Bulldogs will head into next Saturday's game at Misericordia University needing a win and some other results to fall into place to earn a spot in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament.

Wilkes (4-12, 1-5 MAC Freedom) took an early 1-0 lead on Saturday as Eddie Metzger scored off an assist from Camry Huff at 14:24 of the first-half with that score standing into the half despite the Bulldogs holding a 9-5 edge in shots and 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The lead remained into the 82nd minute when freshman Justin Habick was the right man in the right spot at 81:55 hitting a low rolling shot just inside the left post off a loose ball in the box tying the game at one and giving the Bulldogs some life.

Both teams had just one shot in the first overtime period and as the clock ticked just past the mid-way point of the second overtime Kirby played a ball into the box where Roche headed it inside the far post for his third tally of the year and in his last career home game giving DeSales the win.

Sophomore Dan Sulpizio was terrific in goal making nine saves to keep it a one-goal game allowing the comeback to happen.  DSU finished with a 21-19 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bulldogs are off till Saturday when they travel to Misericordia University for the MAC Freedom regular season finale beginning at 6:00 pm.
