Center Valley, PA (October 7, 2015) – The DeSales University men's soccer gave top ranked Franklin & Marshall College a battle on Wednesday afternoon coming up just short in its upset bid falling to 1-0 to the Diplomats in non-conference action.
DeSales (5-7) had three golden opportunities early in the game that could have easily netted a multiple goal lead but all came up empty. Less than two minutes into the game freshman
Michael Kirby beat one Dip defender and then side stepped a sliding F&M (11-0) goalkeeper leaving the net wide open but his touch went just a little too far and a second Diplomat defender was able to recover as Kirby's shot was deflected out by the late arriving defender.
A few minutes later junior
Alex Peek was alone in the box with just the goalie in the way of a 1-0 DSU lead but his shot was struck right at the Diplomat keeper and knocked aside. Freshman
Zach Reichard had another chance about six minutes into the game breaking free on the right side as his shot was just narrowly touched wide of the far post as the game remained scoreless.
Franklin & Marshall really never threatened the goal until the 38
th minute when
Jeremy Levine sent a free kick into the box from just inside midfield that was touched to the outside by
Matthew Reguerio.
Chase Tenbrook was there to chase down the touch and his shot was just over the out-stretched hand of the Bulldogs keeper for a 1-0 lead and ultimately the game-winner as neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second-half.
F&M had a slim 12-8 edge in shots (7-5 for shots on goal), while DSU held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks for the game. Sophomore
Dan Sulpizio made six saves in between the pipes for the Bulldogs.
DeSales returns to action on Saturday when they host FDU-Florham in an important MAC Freedom matchup beginning at Noon.
