Center Valley, PA, (November 9, 2015) – The DeSales University women's soccer team learned it will be traveling to Granville, OH for the first/second round of the NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament facing host Denison University in the first round as announced this afternoon by the NCAA women's soccer committee.
The Bulldogs (14-5), who earned the MAC Freedom automatic bid, take on the first/second round host Denison University (OH), who received one of 20 at-large invitations into the NCAA Tournament posting a 15-4 record this season. Washington University (MO) and York College (PA) match-up in the other first round game. Game times will be announced on Tuesday afternoon after a conference call of the four teams.
It is DSU's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament after the Bulldogs won their first-ever MAC Freedom Championship on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Wilkes University. DeSales has never faced Denison or Washington (MO) and hasn't played York College since the 2007 season.
The Bulldogs are led by junior
Rachel Shive who will enter the tournament with a team-high 18 goals and three assists for 39 points. Her 18 goals and 39 points tie the single-season record at DeSales.
Sophomore
Angelica Bertola is fresh off being named the MAC Freedom Tournament Most Valuable Player having totaled two goals including the game-winner on Saturday in the win over Wilkes. She has 13 goals and five assists for 31 points this season.
Junior
Jess Wetherhold is third on the team in scoring having totaled six goals and tying the single-season record with eight assists for 20 points. Junior
Eve Barna joins Wetherhold in the midfield having totaled two goals and four assists for eight points. Shive and Wetherhold were each named to the All-MAC Freedom First-Team, while Bertola and Barna were named to the Second-Team.
The Bulldog defense is led by junior
Esther Younger (First-Team) and sophomore
Rachel Logue (Second-Team) who each earned All-Conference honors this season having allowed less than goal per game this season. Junior
Emily Hoats has been DSU's top goaltender sporting a 0.93 GAA with 43 saves and a .782 save percentage to go along with five shutouts.
