Las Vegas, NV (December 29, 2015) – The DeSales University women's basketball team scored 27 second-chance points and out-scored the University of La Verne, 30-8, in the paint in a 69-50 win on day two of the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas, NV.
DeSales (6-4) took control early in the lane as junior
Morgan McCollian scored the first seven points of the game for the Bulldogs all in the paint as DSU took a 9-4 lead. La Verne (2-6) fought hard and managed to keep it a tie game after one quarter at 19.
After UofL scored the first basket of the second quarter the Bulldogs out-scored La Verne, 20-5 the rest of the quarter including an 8-0 run over the final 2:10 to take a 39-26 lead into the locker room.
The lead swelled to as many as 20 points a few times in the third quarter but La Verne battled back to pull within 10 points on a three to open the fourth quarter but five straight points from freshman
Katie Miller quickly pushed the lead back to 15 points and DeSales cruised the rest of the way.
McCollian finished with a season-high 25 points and added 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season in nine games played. She earned All-Tournament Team honors. Sophomore
Kaitlin Kelly was outstanding off the bench hitting 5-of-7 from three-point land for 15 points and senior
Jen Napolitano had nine points and eight rebounds in the win. Junior
Nicole Umbenhauer also contributed in the paint pulling down a career-high nine boards.
La Verne got 16 points from
Shannon Irwin as the lone double digit scorer in the loss.
McCollian earns
A.B.E. Doors and Windows player of the game honors, registering her 15
th career double-double for the Bulldogs moving her into 11
th place all-time.
DeSales returns to action on Monday, January 4
th when they host Ursinus College in a non-conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
