Men’s Hoops Victimized by Three-Pointer in Semifinal Loss

Doylestown, PA (February 25, 2015) – Delaware Valley College went 13-for-25 from outside the arc holding off a late second-half charge by the DeSales University men's basketball team en route to an 83-67 win over the Bulldogs in the Freedom Conference Tournament semifinals Wednesday evening.

The Bulldogs move to 17-9 overall on the season, while the Aggies improve to 16-10 overall.  DVC advances to the Freedom Conference championship where they will travel to top seeded Misericordia University on Saturday afternoon.

Four players reached double digits for the Bulldogs including junior Cody Deal with a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds.  Sophomore Kuity Slanger added 13 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, senior Derek Dalition was outstanding off the bench scoring a career-high 12 points, and sophomore Ryan Callahan finished with 11 points.

The Aggies were led by senior Francis Arnold, who scored a game-high 28 points, including five three-pointers, and senior Nick Sullivan, who added 20 points, and hit six three-pointers.  Junior Chris Moran finished with 11 points and junior Manny Ochenje totaled 10 points and blocked four shots in the win.

Deal scored DSU's first five points of the game as the Bulldogs took a 5-2 lead on a Deal three but the Aggies took control from there using an 18-2 run over the span of 6:22 to take a 20-7 lead at the 12:13 mark of the opening half.

The lead swelled to as many as 15 points (35-20) in the first-half before DVC settled for a 41-30 advantage at the break.  The Aggies shot 55.6 percent from the field and went 7-for-13 from outside the arc over the first twenty minutes.  The Bulldogs hit just 39.3 percent from the floor and were just 2-for-6 from downtown.

A Slanger three opened the scoring in the second-half pulling DSU within eight but a 12-4 run at the start of the half gave the Aggies their largest lead of the game (56-39) at the 12:35 mark.

The action went back-and-forth over the next several minutes as DVC led by 16 (65-49) with 5:09 to go when the Bulldogs rallied using a 15-5 run to get within six after a three from Slanger at the 2:34 mark.

Arnold, however, had the answer on the other end hitting his fifth triple of the game from the right corner pushing the advantage back to nine points and the Aggies iced the win from the free throw line hitting 10-of-12 over the final 1:40.

Delaware Valley finished the game shooting 46.2 percent but hit 52.0 percent from outside the arc.  DVC went just 3-for-13 from inside the arc in the second-half but made up for it hitting six more three's in the second-half on 12 attempts.  The Bulldogs shot much better in the second-half, hitting 48.3 percent from the field over the final twenty minutes and 43.9 percent for the game.
