Adam Donovan pitched six strong innings but the DeSales University baseball team managed just five hits and two runs in its first action outside all season, falling at Concordia (TX), 4-2, in the first game of eight during its spring break trip this week.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when freshman
Conner Lafferty led off the inning being hit by a pitch and came around to score four batters later on a wild pitch. Concordia (10-3), playing its 13
th game of the season, answered with solo runs in the third, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings to take a 4-1 lead.
DeSales rallied in the eighth scoring once on an infield single by Lafferty plating sophomore
Tyler Sweeney, who doubled to lead-off the inning, but senior
Nick Fischer struck out swinging, stranding two runners to end the threat and the Bulldogs went in order in the ninth.
Donovan finished his first career collegiate start pitching six strong innings allowing just three hits and three runs, striking out six. Lafferty also had a strong debut with one hit, one run, and one RBI, reaching base twice in the loss. Sweeney and sophomore
Richie Lancashire also reached base twice for the Bulldogs.
DSU travels to Mary Hardin-Baylor tomorrow with first pitch set for 7:00 pm.
