Wallace/Fraser Lead Baseball to 5-1 Win over Mary Hardin-Baylor

Belton, TX (March 2, 2015) – Juniors Steven Wallace and Evan Fraser combined to allow just one unearned run leading the DeSales University baseball team past Mary Hardin-Baylor, 5-1, on Monday evening at Red Murff Field.

The Bulldogs (1-1 overall) plated solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings and scored three times in the sixth to lead 5-0.  In the fourth, freshman Conner Lafferty singled, advanced to second on a single from sophomore Mike Kacergis, stole third, and eventually scored on a passed ball with two outs.

In the fifth sophomore Tyler Sweeney reached base via an error with two outs and did a great job going first-to-third on a base hit from sophomore Tommy DePaul and scored when DePaul got into a rundown on a double steal.

In the sixth Lafferty opened the inning with a single and Kacergis was hit by a pitch.  The bases were loaded after junior Jay Maletz was safe on a bunt single.  Lafferty scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Danny Licamara, Kacergis came around to score on a fielder's choice off the bat off sophomore Richie Lancashire, and Maleta touched home plate on a sacrifice fly from freshman Kevin Benjamin.

Wallace earned the win pitching 6 2/3 strong innings allowing six hits and striking out eight.  Fraser entered in the seventh with the bases loaded and got out of the jam allowing just the one unearned run, stranded two runners in the eighth, and retired the side in order in the ninth to earn the save.

DePaul and Lafferty each had two hits as part of a nine-hit attack for the Bulldogs.

DSU returns to action on Tuesday when they face Schreiner University beginning at 8:00 pm (EST).
