San Antonio, TX (March 3, 2015) – Three straight two-out hits including a double off the wall from junior
Carlos Urena plating the game-winning run led the DeSales University baseball team to its second straight win, 8-7, over Schreiner University in game three of the Bulldogs eight-game spring break trip to San Antonio, TX.
The Bulldogs (2-1) trailed 2-0 early as Schreiner (2-9) plated two runs in the first inning. DSU wasted no time getting back in the game as freshman
Conner Lafferty knocked in sophomore
Tommy DePaul with an RBI triple, later scored on a single from junior
Jay Maletz and Urena knocked in sophomore
Mike Kacergis with a single to give DeSales a 3-2 first inning lead.
DSU added another run in the second inning on an RBI single from Lafferty scoring senior
Drew Borger, but the Mountaineers scored four times in the third inning chasing sophomore
Andrew Schuler, taking a 6-4 lead.
Sophomore
Tyler Cooperman entered and gave the Bulldog offense a chance to get back in the game tossing three scoreless innings allowing just one hit and striking out three.
DeSales pulled within one (6-5) in the fifth when Kacergis tripled home DePaul but Schreiner got that run back in the top of the seventh inning to lead 7-5.
The Bulldogs answered with a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning as sophomore
Danny Licamara singled to lead off the inning. DePaul sacrificed him to second and Lafferty was retired on a bullet line out to the first baseman.
Kacergis came thru with a single scoring Licamara and scored one batter later on a single from Maletz. Urena then stepped to the plate and connected on a rocket to right field that hit off the wall as Maletz scampered home with the game-winning run.
Senior
Eric Elmer and junior
Evan Fraser combined to pitch a perfect eighth inning and sophomore
Cameron Hoos shut the door with a perfect ninth to earn his first save of the season. Elmer earned the win pitching 1 1/3 perfect innings of relief.
Lafferty and Urena each had three hits, while Maletz and Kacergis had two hits each. DSU's 3-thru-6 hitters combined to go 10-for-16 with eight RBI's in the win. DePaul scored twice.
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they take on Texas Lutheran University beginning at 4:00 pm (EST).
