Madison, NJ (April 11, 2015) – A six run fifth inning in game two turned around a 3-1 deficit and led the DeSales University baseball team to a 7-5 win in game two salvaging a split of a Freedom Conference doubleheader at FDU-Florham on Saturday afternoon after dropping game one, 7-3, to the Devils.
Game One (L/3-7)The Bulldogs (11-11, 8-2 Freedom) were out quickly in game one scoring three times in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead on an RBI groundout from freshman
Conner Lafferty and a two-RBI single from junior
Alec Hardy.
FDU (4-14, 2-5 Freedom) countered with one run in the bottom of the first inning and took the lead for good in the third with three runs coming on five singles and a walk. The Devils added three more tallies in the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead and DSU left the bases loaded in both the fourth and sixth innings.
DePaul led the offense with three hits, while Hardy and freshman
Konner Schneider each had two hits. Freshman
Adam Donovan suffered the loss allowing six hits and four runs over two innings. Senior
Eric Dillard was excellent out of the bullpen tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings striking out four.
Game Two (W/7-5)DSU again struck first scoring once in the top of the third inning on an RBI single from DePaul to take a 1-0 lead. FDU countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning but the Bulldogs had the answer with six runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-3 lead.
DeSales took advantage of three walks in the inning as DePaul, senior
Drew Borger, Hardy, sophomore
Mike Kacergis, and junior
Jay Maletz all had RBIs in the six-run fifth.
The Devils got solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings but with two men on and no one out in the sixth inning junior
Evan Fraser entered the game and recorded a six-out save, his fourth of the year, to preserve the game two victory.
Sophomore
Cameron Hoos earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the season allowing three earned runs over 4 1/3 innings, striking out five. Kacergis had two hits for the Bulldogs to lead a seven hit attack.
The Bulldogs will finish this three game set with the Devils on Monday when they host FDU-Florham at Butz Field beginning at 3:30 pm.
