Bulldogs Sweep Delaware Valley; Clinch Freedom Playoff Spot

Center Valley, PA (April 16, 2015) – The DeSales University softball team scored a pair of eight run wins, sweeping Delaware Valley University, 12-0 and 12-4, to clinch a spot in the Freedom Conference Championship Tournament in two weeks on Thursday afternoon.

Game One (W/12-0)
The Bulldogs (11-9, 9-1 Freedom) scored in every inning taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer from junior DJ McCauley.  DSU added two more runs in the second inning on an Aggie (1-19, 1-9 Freedom) error and sacrifice fly from sophomore Alexa Beaumont.

In the third DSU broke it open scoring seven times including back-to-back home runs from Beaumont and senior Carly Bartholomew, including a three-run shot from Beaumont as well as a two-run double from junior Michelle Gessner, her 100th career hit.

McCauley earned the win in the circle to improve to 5-3 on the season tossing her 13th career shutout allowing just four hits.  Junior Emily Hockman led the offense going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, Gessner scored twice and knocked in two runs, McCauley scored twice and also knocked in two, and Beaumont knocked in four runs in game one.

Game Two (W/12-4)
Delaware Valley took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on a double, two walks, and two Bulldog wild pitches and continued to lead by two entering the fourth inning.

DSU took control on the fourth scoring 10 times.  Bartholomew got things started with a one-out double and scored three batters later on a two-RBI single from freshman Andrea Artesani.

After an Aggie error helped extend the inning DeSales took full advantage scoring eight unearned runs including a three-run double from Hockman, an RBI single from Beaumont, and the exclamation point, a grand slam from freshman Haley Frati giving the Bulldogs a 10-2 lead.

DVC scored two more in the top of the fifth inning but DSU ended it with two of its own runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Gessner and Beaumont to end the game.

Artesani earned the win despite allowing four runs over five innings, striking out one.  Hockman drove in three runs, Beaumont had two hits and two RBIs, Bartholomew scored twice, and Frati scored twice and knocked in four in the win.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they host King's College in an important Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm as DSU looks to keep pace with Misericordia University who is tied in first place currently with DeSales in the Freedom Conference standings.
