Center Valley, PA (April 19, 2015) – Sophomore
Tommy DePaul tied the NCAA Division III record for stolen bases in a game with seven in game one and sophomore
Andrew Schuler tossed a four hit shutout in game two leading the DeSales University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of King's College on Sunday afternoon at Butz Field.
The Bulldogs (17-12, 12-2 Freedom) have now won seven of their last eight games and complete the weekend sweep of King's (5-18, 1-12 Freedom) to stay in sole possession of first place in the Freedom Conference standings as we enter the final two weeks of the regular season.
DePaul swiped seven bases in the first game to tie the single-game record of seven which had been accomplished three other times, most recently in 2011, in the history of NCAA Division III baseball. The previous DeSales record was five by
Andrew Heard. The Bulldogs stole 12 bases as a team in game one, one shy of the team record of 13 accomplished twice.
Game One (W/14-4)DSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when DePaul walked, stole second, stole third, and then stole home as part of a double steal with senior
Drew Borger who had reached via an error.
The Bulldogs added four more runs in the third when again DePaul walked to lead off the inning, stole second and third again and scored on an RBI groundout from freshman
Hunter Hart. DSU then capitalized on three more Monarch walks issued and stole four more bags in the inning to take a 5-0 lead.
DePaul singled and stole second in the fourth inning, scoring two batters later on a single by Borger and tied the record in the sixth, after King's had cut the lead down to 7-2, when he walked and stole second before scoring four batters on a two-RBI double from junior
Colby Kulig.
Junior
Steven Wallace earned the win on the mound pitching six strong innings allowing just six hits and three runs while striking out six.
DePaul finished 1-for-1 with four runs scored and those seven stolen bases. Borger was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Kulig knocked in three runs, and freshman
Randal Pacchioli had a pinch-hit bases clearing double in the seventh inning.
Game Two (W/9-0)The Bulldogs scored five runs in the first inning on six singles and that was all Schuler needed as he allowed just four hits and six Monarch base runners over seven innings, striking out 10, to record his second complete-game shutout of the season.
DSU added two more runs in the third when Kulig tripled home sophomore
Mike Kacergis and scored on a throwing error on the relay to third base and scored twice in the fourth on a double from DePaul, a single from junior
Carlos Urena, and a single from Borger.
DePaul finished 2-for-3 with two more runs scored, Borger had two more hits and knocked in two runs, and Kulig had two hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs to lead the offense.
DeSales is scheduled to return to action tomorrow, weather pending, when they host Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
