Baseball Sweeps Del. Val.; Clinches Top Seed in Playoffs

Doylestown, PA (April 26, 2015) – Freshman Adam Donovan fired a 4-hit shutout in a 4-0 game one win and the DeSales University baseball team completed the sweep with an 8-2 game two victory recording its 10th straight win on Sunday afternoon in Freedom Conference action.

The sweep moves DSU to 24-12 overall and 18-2 in the Freedom Conference.  DSU has clinched the #1 seed in the Freedom Conference Tournament, which will take place on May 7-9 at Owl's Field in Reading, PA.  Misericordia University, Manhattanville College, and Eastern University will be the other three teams in the Conference Tournament with Eastern locked in as the #4 seed and DSU's first opponent.

Game One (W/4-0)
Donovan was outstanding firing his first career complete-game shutout allowing just four hits and striking out five.  It was a 0-0 game in the bottom of the fifth when Donovan ran into some trouble as the Aggies (10-21, 2-16 Freedom) loaded the bases with a single, a Bulldog error, and a hit by pitch with no one out.

The DVU top of the order came up but Donovan struck out the first two batters and induced a ground ball to second base to end the threat to keep it a scoreless tie.

In the top of the sixth DSU finally broke thru.  Sophomore Tommy DePaul singled with one out, freshman Hunter Hart walked, and senior Drew Borger singled to load the bases with one out.

Junior Carlos Urena pushed the first run across with a bases loaded walk and junior Colby Kulig delivered the knockout blow with a two-run double to make it 3-0.  Freshman Conner Lafferty hit a sacrifice fly one batter later and Donovan easily worked thru the sixth and seventh innings to earn his second win of the year.

DSU had just four hits in the win offensively but had three of them in the four-run sixth inning.

Game Two (W/8-2)
The Bulldogs jumped out early in game two scoring three times in the first and twice in the second to take a 5-0 lead.  Lafferty had the big blow in the first with a bases clearing double and Borger knocked in both runs in the second with a single thru the left side.

DSU added two more runs in the sixth on an RBI single from Lafferty and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Tyler Sweeney and freshman Konner Schneider had a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning plating Lafferty.

Senior Eric Elmer earned the win, his third of the season in his first start of the season, lasting five innings allowing seven hits and just one earned run.  Junior Chris Zampini was outstanding in relief pitching two perfect innings to close out the win.

Lafferty finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs, DePaul had two hits, Borger had two hits and two RBIs, and Kulig scored twice to lead the offensive attack.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they host local rival Muhlenberg College in a non-conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
