Center Valley, PA (April 6, 2015) – Sophomore
Andrew Schuler tossed a five-hit shutout in game one and the Bulldog offense scored five runs over the first two innings and held on late to earn a doubleheader sweep of Eastern University, 4-0 and 5-4, in Freedom Conference action on Monday afternoon.
Game One (W/4-0)Schuler was outstanding in his fourth start of the year allowing just five hits and retiring the side in order three times to earn his second win of the year. He struck out six and walked two, allowing just three base-runners to reach second base.
The game was a scoreless pitcher's duel into the bottom of the fifth inning when DeSales (10-10, 7-1 Freedom) broke thru for four runs. Senior
Drew Borger opened the frame with a double to left center and scored three batters later on a fielder's choice by sophomore
Tommy DePaul and freshman
Konner Schneider scampered home on the play when the throw by the Eagle (5-12, 2-5 Freedom) shortstop to turn the double play went wide of the first base bag.
Sophomore
Mike Kacergis knocked in DePaul, who stole second, and Kacergis scored two batters later on a single up the middle by junior
Alec Hardy.
Hardy finished the game 3-for-3 with two doubles and Borger and freshman
Conner Lafferty each had two hits in the game one win. The game one win was head coach
Tim Neiman's 1,000th career game coached at DeSales.
Game Two (W/5-4)The Bulldogs jumped out early in game two taking advantage of five walks over the first two innings to score five runs. Hardy hit a two-run home run in the first inning and junior
Jay Maletz knocked in junior
Carlos Urena with a single two batters later to post three runs in the first.
In the second Hardy drew a bases loaded walk to force in the first of two runs and sophomore
Jesse Smoot scored on a wild pitch one batter later.
Sophomore
Tyler Cooperman earned the win in relief pitching 2 2/3 perfect innings, striking out three. Junior
Evan Fraser earned his third save of the year with a perfect seventh inning. Seven of the Bulldogs nine starters had a hit as Hardy again led the way with three RBIs offensively.
The Bulldogs are slated to return to action tomorrow when they host Delaware Valley College in another Freedom Conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
