Max Cortina and
Zach Reichard each scored goals leading the DeSales University men's soccer team past Berkeley College (NJ), 2-1, in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday evening.
After a scoreless first-half DSU (1-0 overall) scored twice in the span of 4:04 to take a 2-0 lead and held off a late rally from Berkeley (0-1 overall) to record the win.
Reichard started the scoring deflecting in a free ball feed into the box from junior
Alex Peek in the 51
st minute. Cortina wasted no time giving the Bulldogs an insurance goal scoring 4:04 later, scoring from the left side from about 15 yards out unassisted.
Berkeley pulled within one in the 78
th minute but sophomore
Dan Sulpizio and the Bulldog defense held BC scoreless over the final 12 minutes to earn the win.
DSU held a 19-9 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sulpizio made four saves in the win.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they take on Lebanon Valley College in the first game of the Elizabethtown College Tournament beginning at 4:00 pm.
