Newport News, VA (September 18, 2015) – The DeSales University volleyball team won its second straight five-set match on Friday afternoon topping Bethany College (WV), 3-2 (25-19, 24-26, 26-24, 20-25, 15-11), in the opening match of the Christopher Newport University Invitational.
DeSales (8-4) took the first set shaking off a 4-0 hole to win 25-19. The second and third sets were both extremely tight as Bethany (8-3) shook off a late rally by the Bulldogs to earn a 26-24 win in the second set and facing set point at 24-23, DSU won the next three points in the third set to earn a 26-24 win.
Bethany took the fourth set, 25-20, forcing a fifth set but the Bulldogs started quickly and never trailed in the fifth set opening up a 7-3 lead and extending the advantage to 12-7 before closing out the match, 15-11.
Freshman
Gabby Savite' led the offensive attack with 15 kills and added 25 digs, while sophomore
Logan Wieziolowski finished with 11 kills. Senior
Kait Anderson and junior
Jess Swanson each finished with nine kills.
Freshman
Natalie Gray led a strong defensive effort that saw the team record 110 digs with a team-high 26. Senior
Laura Greenberg added 20 digs and had two aces and junior
Lisa Wallitsch finished with 45 assists and 18 digs in the win.
The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow when they take on host Christopher Newport University and Averett University.
