Center Valley, PA (September 19, 2015) – Senior
Meryah Harding scored off a corner with 37 seconds left lifting the DeSales University field hockey team to an exciting 2-1 win over William Paterson University on Saturday afternoon.
The win is DSU's first of the season and is also the first win on the Bulldogs' new turf field after coming up short in its first game on the new turf a few weeks ago.
DeSales had taken a 1-0 lead into halftime after freshman
Chelsea DeFrancisco scored in the 29
th minute tipping home a shot from Harding late in the first-half. It was DeFrancisco's second goal of the season.
WPU (3-4) tied the game just 5:52 into the second-half when
Angelica Giammetta scored off an assist from
Carly Satter. The Pioneers missed a golden opportunity to take a 2-1 lead with about 15 minutes left as a pass to the far post hopped over a stick for what would have been a wide open goal late in the game.
With about 90 seconds left DSU made a run at the Pioneer circle and forced a corner with about 57 seconds left. On the corner DeFrancisco pushed the ball out to Harding who passed over to sophomore
Kelly Meade. Meade took a touch and passed it back to Harding who rifled a shot in between multiple defenders and inside the right post for the game-winner and her second tally of the season.
Freshman
Savanna Lacek made seven saves in the cage, while junior
Abby Wagner and Meade each had two defensive saves in the win.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Wednesday when they host Juniata College beginning at 4:00 pm.
