Shive’s Hat Trick Lifts DeSales past Alvernia, 4-2

Reading, PA (September 19, 2015) – Junior Rachel Shive scored her first three career goals on Saturday afternoon leading the DeSales University women's soccer team past Alvernia University, 4-2, in non-conference action.

The Bulldogs (4-3) took a 1-0 lead at the half as Shive tallied her first marker of the season just 2:30 before the half taking a pass from freshman Sydney Gandy and firing a shot into the net.

Shive made it a two-goal game in the 69th minute as her shot ricocheted off the cross bar and in giving DSU a 2-0 lead.

Alvernia stormed back cutting the lead in half in the 72nd minute and then tying the game in the 77th minute when Johnna Shank's corner kick skimmed off a Bulldog defenders head and into the net.

Shive needed just 2:52 to give DeSales the lead back as beat a defender 1-v-1 in the box and blasted a shot with her left foot into the corner of the net.  Junior Jess Wetherhold then provided the insurance goal weaving thru the Crusader (2-6) defense and beating the goalkeeper high for her fourth goal of the season.

Junior Emily Hoats made the start in net and stopped seven shots for the Bulldogs.  DSU had a slim 16-14 edge in shots, while Alvernia enjoyed a healthy 14-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday when they travel crosstown to take on local rival Moravian College beginning at 4:00 pm.
