Women’s Hoops Rolls past Wilkes; Wins Eighth Straight

Center Valley, PA (January 20, 2016) – The DeSales University women's basketball won its eighth straight game Wednesday night rolling past Wilkes University, 76-52, to stay unbeaten in MAC Freedom action.

The eight straight wins are the longest winning streak since also winning eight straight in the middle of the 2013-14 season.  Eleven different players scored including senior Jen Napolitano with a game-high 14 points, junior Morgan McCollian with 12 points, and sophomore Angelica Bertola with 13 points off the bench to lead the way.

Wilkes (3-13, 0-5 MAC Freedom) was led by Cara Basile and Catey McFadden who each tossed in 11 points.

The Colonels started strong taking a 6-2 lead early before the Bulldogs (12-4, 5-0 MAC Freedom) took control using a 20-1 run taking a 22-7 lead at the start of the second quarter.  Most of the damage was done by junior Megan Baird and Napolitano as they each hit two three's during the spurt.  The lead grew to as many as 23 points with DeSales leading 39-16 at the half.

The lead peaked at 33 points mid-way thru the third quarter (55-22) as the Bulldogs cruised the rest of the way.

The DeSales bench was outstanding in the win out-scoring Wilkes bench, 38-17.  DSU finished the game with a season-high 26 assists led by freshman Morgan Birmelin with a season-high nine.  DeSales also shot 46.3 percent from the field and held Wilkes to just 29.6 percent shooting.

Bertola earns A.B.E. Doors and Windows Player of the Game honors shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the field.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to be back in action on Saturday at Delaware Valley University but that game is likely to be moved so stay tuned to the DeSales athletics web site for updated details on the game Thursday afternoon.
