Wilkes-Barre, PA (January 30, 2016) – Freshman
Morgan Birmelin recorded her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 assists leading the DeSales University women's basketball team past King's College, 83-59, in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon in Scandlon Gymnasium.
Birmelin shot 5-for-6 from the field and added five rebounds in the win. Sophomore
Kaitlin Kelly led the scoring attack with 18 points, hitting six three-pointers, senior
Jen Napolitano added 17 points, 12 in the second-half, and junior
Nicole Umbenhauer finished with 10 points off the bench.
Freshman
Katie Miller finished with eight points and junior
Morgan McCollian totaled six points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Bulldogs (14-5, 7-1 MAC Freedom).
King's (11-8, 4-4 MAC Freedom) led the Lady Monarchs attack with 15 points off the bench,
Jennifer Fabian finished with 11 points, and
Tara Zdancewicz added 10 points in the loss.
DeSales never trailed in the game scoring the first 11 points of the game. KC pulled to within five (32-27) near the end of the second quarter but an Umbenahauer lay-up and two 3's from Napolitano and Kelly pushed the lead back to 11 points (42-31) and DSU led by 13 points at the break.
It was all Bulldogs in the second-half pushing the lead 19 points scoring eight of the first nine second-half points and pushed the lead to as many as 27 points before the final 83-59 tally.
DeSales committed just 10 turnovers in the win and shot 44.4 percent from the field for the game.
Birmelin earns
A.B.E. Doors and Windows Player of the Game honors handing out a career-high 10 assists without committing a turnover.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, February 3
rd when they return home to host Misericordia University beginning at 6:00 pm.
