Swarthmore, PA (October 21, 2016) - The DeSales University volleyball dropped two matches on day one of the Garnet Classic played at Swarthmore College on Friday evening.
The Bulldogs dropped a hard-fought five-set match to Stockton University, 3-2 (15-25, 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 16-14), to start the day before falling to classic host Swarthmore College, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-16), in the second match.
Match #1 (L/2-3 vs. Stockton)
DSU opened the match hitting .256 in the first to win easily but committed 11 hitting errors in the second set to drop a tight one, 25-23. Â After Stockton took a 2-1 lead, the Bulldogs (17-12) rallied to win the fourth set, 25-19. Â DSU fell behind 8-1 in the fifth but rallied to tie the set at 14 before Stockton scored two straight to take the match.
Four players had double digit kills including sophomoreÂ
Gabby Savite`Â with 16 kills and freshmanÂ
Morghan Shoemaker with 15 kills.  FreshmanÂ
Jenna Sievert totaled 11 kills and sophomoreÂ
Taylor Antoniewicz added 10 kills and four blocks.
SeniorÂ
Lisa Wallitsch finished with 54 assists, while sophomoreÂ
Natalie Gray led the defense with 23 digs and Savite` added 18 digs.  Gray also had five service aces.
Match #2 (L/0-3 Swarthmore)
The Bulldogs hit just .078 vs. the Garnet to fall in straight sets.
SeniorÂ
Jess Swanson was the kill leader with eight kills and Shoemaker added seven kills.  Gray led the defense once again with 23 digs, Wallitsch finished with 19 assists and 13 digs, and freshmanÂ
Cristal Fernandez added 12 digs.
The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow when they face Catholic University and Colby College on day two of the Garnet Classic.
