Wilkes-Barre, PA (October 22, 2016) - Sophomore
Alex DiRienzo scored the game's lone goal lifting the DeSales University men's soccer team past Wilkes University, 1-0, clinching a spot in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament on Saturday evening.
The Bulldogs (9-6-2, 4-2 MAC Freedom) are now in a three-way tie with Eastern University and FDU-Florham for second place with one game left on the MAC Freedom schedule Saturday vs. Eastern University. DSU has clinched a spot in the top four but with a win on Saturday vs. Eastern can clinch the #2 seed in the postseason tournament and at least one home playoff game.
After a scoreless first-half DSU got the eventual game-winner in the 66th minute when DiRienzo took a long pass outside the box, beat two Colonel (3-13, 1-5 MAC Freedom) defenders, and fired a low shot just inside the far post for his third goal of the year.
The Bulldog defense and junior
Dan Sulpizio did the rest as Sulpizio made four saves to record his fifth shutout of the season in the win.
DSU had a 26-10 advantage in shots and an 11-7 edge in corner kicks for the game.
DeSales does have one more game before Saturday's showdown with Eastern with a home playoff game on the line hosting local rival Moravian College on Thursday beginning at 3:00 pm.
