Wilkes-Barre, PA (February 10, 2016) – The DeSales University women's basketball team held Wilkes University to just three second-half field goals rolling past the Colonels, 69-46, in MAC Freedom action on Wednesday evening at the Marts Center.
Junior
Morgan McCollian led the Bulldogs (17-5, 10-1 MAC Freedom) with her 10
th double-double of the year, 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior
Jen Napolitano was just rebound shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine boards and sophomore
Kaitlin Kelly finished with 11 points in the win. Freshman
Katie Miller had a season-high seven assists.
Wilkes (4-18, 1-10 MAC Freedom) was led by
Cara Basile with 16 points.
DeSales struggled to shoot the ball in the first-half hitting just 29.4 percent from the field and committing nine turnovers but the defense forced nine Colonel turnovers as DSU held a slim 29-26 edge at the break.
The second-half was all Bulldogs as Wilkes had just one field goal in the third quarter and was held without a field goal in the fourth quarter till the final few minutes.
DSU opened the half with a 10-1 run to take a 39-27 lead led by two 3's from Kelly and four straight points from McCollian. Back-to-back three's from Napolitano and junior
Megan Baird gave DeSales a 48-32 lead before Wilkes finished the third quarter with a three cutting it down to 13 points.
DeSales scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter opening up a 26-point advantage and cruised the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs shot much better in the second-half (37.8%) and forced 15 more Wilkes turnovers in the second-half. DSU also dominated the glass out-rebounding Wilkes, 53-40 leading to 18 second chance points. DeSales had 26 points off WU's 24 miscues.
McCollians earns
A.B.E. Doors and Windows Player of the Game honors recording her 10
th double-double of the year in the win.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they host FDU-Florham in an important MAC Freedom game beginning at 1:00 pm.
