Center Valley, PA (March 19, 2016) – Senior
Alec Hardy had a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one and Misericordia broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the fifth inning in game two as the two teams split a MAC Freedom doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Butz Field.
Game One (W/3-2)The Bulldogs (4-6, 1-2 MAC Freedom) had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before the Cougars (9-5, 2-1 MAC Freedom) tied the game at two in the fifth inning. DSU took a 1-0 lead in the first on a bunt base hit from junior
Tommy DePaul and a Cougar error and added another in the third on a second Cougar error and a wild pitch.
With the game tied entering the bottom of the seventh inning DePaul reached base with a single up the middle and one out. After a walk by junior
Mike Kacergis, senior
Jay Maletz hit a slow roller up the middle that Kacergis was forced out at second putting runners on the corners. Hardy came to the plate and laced a single to left field scoring DePaul giving DSU the 3-2 win.
DePaul finished 3-for-3 as the Bulldogs totaled seven hits in the win. Senior
Steven Wallace earned his second win of the season with a strong complete-game effort allowing just two hits and one earned run, striking out four.
Game Two (L/2-5)Misericordia took a 2-0 lead thru 2 ½ innings with solo runs in the first and third innings. DeSales tied the game at two with two runs in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single from Kacergis and sacrifice fly from Maletz.
The Cougars got three runs in the top of the fifth after consecutive walks to lead off the inning came around to score but the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning before Maletz rolled into an inning ending double play ending the threat and DSU had just one more base-runner over the final two innings.
Junior
Pat Rhoads had two hits in game two for DeSales. Sophomore
Adam Donovan took the loss allowing four runs over four innings, walking five and striking out two.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Monday when they travel to Lebanon Valley College for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
