Second-Half Comeback Falls just Short in 7-6 Loss to Scranton

Center Valley, PA (March 2, 2016) – The DeSales University men's lacrosse team scored four straight goals in the third period to take a 5-4 lead but Scranton rebounded with three straight goals of its own holding on for a 7-6 win over the Bulldogs in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

Scranton (2-1) controlled play for most of the first-half, out-shooting the Bulldogs (0-2), 17-9, over the first 30 minutes to take a 4-1 lead into the halftime locker room.

DSU stormed out of the second-half gates scoring twice in the first 1:14 of the half to pull within one goal and took a 5-4 lead on a man-up goal from sophomore Joe Neggia just 4:26 into the second-half.

Scranton tied the game on a goal at the 7:10 mark of the third quarter and re-took the lead with just 10 seconds left on the clock in the third quarter.  The Royals added an insurance goal mid-way thru the fourth quarter but DeSales pulled to within one again at 3:59 on a goal from junior Justin Wilson.  DSU reclaimed possession with 59.8 seconds left on a Scranton penalty and were man-up for the rest of the game.

The Bulldogs took two shots that both went wide before calling timeout with 27 ticks left.  Out of the timeout DSU again had two chances to score but both shots went wide as time expired on the comeback.

DeSales completely dominated the second-half outshooting Scranton 18-8 and holding an 18-4 advantage in ground balls in the second-half.  DSU also dominated face-offs, led by junior Jake McNamara with 12 wins in 16 attempts for the game.

Wilson led the Bulldogs in scoring with three goals, while Neggia, senior Ryan Loughlin, and sophomore Tommy Friedman also each scored once.  Neggia, sophomore Josh Harman, and sophomore Bryan Weber each had an assist.

Loughlin led the team with five ground balls and senior Matt Warnken made three saves in between the pipes.

The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, March 8th when they take on Clark University in Clearwater, FL beginning at 6:00 pm.
