Wilkes-Barre, PA (March 4, 2016) – The DeSales University baseball team scored five runs in the fourth inning opening up a 6-2 lead and took advantage of seven King's College errors en route to an 11-2 win over the Monarchs in game one of a three-game in MAC Freedom play on Thursday afternoon.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on two Monarch (10-6, 1-3 MAC Freedom) errors the Bulldogs (6-7, 2-2 MAC Freedom) fell behind 2-1 after three innings.
DeSales then scored five times in the fourth inning taking advantage of two more errors as senior
Jay Maletz had an RBI double and junior
Tyler Sweeney and senior
Cobly Kulig each had RBIs in the inning to take a 6-2 lead.
The Bulldogs tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a two-RBI single from junior
Pat Rhoads to take an 8-2 lead and never looked back from there.
Senior
Steven Wallace earned the win battling thru five innings for his third victory of the season allowing just five hits and striking out five. Junior
Tyler Cooperman was outstanding out of the bullpen pitching four scoreless innings to earn his second save of the year allowing just one hit and striking out five.
DSU finished with 10 hits led by freshman
Tommy Epsaro as the lone Bulldog with multiple hits. Epsaro also scored four times and Maletz crossed home plate three times. Sweeney and Rhoads each had two RBIs in the win.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Rowan University for a non-conference game beginning at 1:00 pm.
