Center Valley, PA (April 16, 2016) – The DeSales University baseball team split a MAC Freedom home doubleheader with FDU-Florham on Saturday afternoon in two pitcher's duels with the Devils taking game one, 1-0, and the Bulldogs squeezing out a 3-2 game two win to take two of three in the weekend series.
Game One (L/0-1)
FDU-Florham (9-16-1, 3-10 MAC Freedom) scored the lone run of the game in the first inning and DSU (17-11, 9-4 MAC Freedom) managed just three hits to drop game one, 1-0.
The Bulldogs had their best chance to score in the fourth inning when sophomore
Conner Lafferty singled and moved to third on a one-out double from senior
Alec Hardy. Consecutive strikeouts however ended the threat. DSU also put a runner in scoring position with out in the seventh but a strikeout and diving catch in centerfield ended the game.
Senior
Steven Wallace was terrific on the bump despite taking the loss allowing just six hits and the one run in a complete-game effort striking out six.
Game Two (W/3-2)
DeSales took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on three consecutive singles from junior
Pat Rhoads, junior
Jesse Smoot, and Lafferty. The Devils tied the game at two with solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings but the Bulldogs scratched out the eventual game-winner in the bottom of the sixth on two singles and a wild pitch.
Senior
Evan Fraser earned his fourth save of the game in the win pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning striking out two. Senior
Chris Zampini improved to 3-0 with six strong innings allowing seven hits and two runs striking out four.
Rhoads, Hardy, and Licamara all had two hits in the game two win.
The Bulldogs are right back to action tomorrow when they host King's College in games two and three of their three-game series postponed from a few weeks ago. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm at Butz Field.
