Center Valley, PA (April 17, 2016) – The DeSales University baseball team worked out of a bases loaded no outs jam in the top of the seventh in game one but saw a late inning comeback in game two fall just short splitting a MAC Freedom doubleheader with King's College winning game one, 6-5, before dropping game two, 5-3 on Sunday afternoon.
Game One (W/6-5)
The Bulldogs (18-12, 10-5 MAC Freedom) jumped out early scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning after King's (18-8, 8-5 MAC Freedom) had scored once to lead 4-1 after one. Senior
Alec Hardy had a two-RBI single, sophomore
Hunter Hart knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly, and junior
Danny Licamara had an RBI groundout in the inning.
King's pulled within one run with two tallies in the top of the fourth but solo runs in the fourth and fifth on RBIs from freshman
Jimmy Johnstone and Hart pushed the lead back to three (6-3) entering the seventh inning.
Senior
Evan Fraser came on looking for his fifth save of the year but issued two walks and two singles before being removed with King's trailing by just one (6-5) and runners on second and third. Junior
Tyler Cooperman was called one to get out of the jam and he did just that.
He forced the first batter to foul out to third base, intentionally walked the second batter, struck out the third batter, and forced a game-ending ground out to first base to earn his fourth save of the year.
Freshman
Austin Kroeger earned the win, his first collegiate victory tossing four innings allowing just four hits and two earned runs. Hardy and Hart each had two RBIs, while Johnstone, Hardy, and junior
Tommy DePaul all had two hits in the game one win.
Game Two (L/3-5)
Game two saw King's jump out early scoring four runs in the top of the second inning, two of which were unearned. The Bulldogs struggled offensively until late in the game.
DSU put its first two runners on base in the fourth but a fielder's choice and pick-off ended the threat. In the sixth the Bulldogs rallied as the first three batters all singled to start the inning as DSU had runners on first and third with no one out but a double steal saw freshman
Tommy Epsaro out at home and Hardy grounded out putting two outs on the board.
A walk from senior
Jay Maletz extended the inning and consecutive two-out singles from Licamara and junior
Mike Kacergis made it 4-3 but Johnstone grounded out to the pitcher to end the threat with King's still holding a one-run lead.
The Monarchs added a single run in the seventh and the Bulldogs went in order in the bottom of the inning to post the final tally.
Freshman
Felix Martinez Jr. took the loss allowing four runs over two innings. Senior
Kevin Benjamin pitched very well in relief going four innings allowing just one unearned run and striking out four.
DePaul had two more hits to lead a seven-hit attack.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to The University of Scranton for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
