Kingston, PA (April 2, 2016) – The DeSales University baseball team split its doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Wilkes University dropping game one 5-4 before rebounding with a dominating 18-0 win in game two to take two of three in the weekend series.
Game One (L/4-5)Wilkes (13-10, 4-5 MAC Freedom) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first game taking advantage of four walks in the inning. DeSales (10-9, 4-3 MAC Freedom) battled back scoring twice in the third and fourth innings to tie the game at four.
Freshman
Tommy Epsaro had a solo home run and junior
Mike Kacergis doubled home a run in the third, while junior
Tyler Sweeney had an RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
The game remained tied heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when the Bulldogs hurt themselves issuing three more walks as the Colonels scored the go ahead run on three walks and an error and DSU went in order in the top of the seventh.
Sophomore
Adam Donovan took the loss allowing all five runs, four earned, lasting 5 2/3 innings allowing just three hits but walking seven. Epsaro finished 2-for-3 to lead the offense.
Game Two (W/18-0)The Bulldogs completed dominated game two scoring three times in the first, twice in the third and fourth, and blew the game open in the fifth with 10 runs to take an 18-0 lead. Freshman
Nick White hit his first collegiate home run in the seventh to provide the final tally.
Offensively DSU had 16 hits including sophomore
Hunter Hart going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs, White going 2-for-2, sophomore
Conner Lafferty scoring twice, Kacergis posting a 3-for-3 line with two runs and two RBIs, and senior
Alec Hardy scoring three runs.
Senior
Jay Maletz was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Sweeney finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Epsaro and freshman
Preston Amato each scored twice.
Senior
Chris Zampini pitched very well earning the win tossing five strong allowing just two hits and striking out four.
The Bulldogs are right back to action tomorrow when they host King's College in another MAC Freedom doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm at Butz Field.
