Center Valley, PA (April 5, 2016) – The DeSales University baseball team scored eight runs in the eighth inning breaking open a close game in a 14-6 win over Rutgers-Newark in non-conference action on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at Butz Field.
DSU (11-9) took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when junior
Tommy DePaul singled home junior
Tyler Sweeney but the Scarlet Raiders (8-14) answered with two runs in the top of the fourth to lead, 2-1.
The Bulldogs took the lead right back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-RBI double from freshman
Preston Amato and RBI single from Sweeney and led 5-2 after five innings after a solo run in the fifth.
Rutgers tied the game at five with three runs in the top of the sixth but the Bulldogs took the lead for good in the seventh when Amato had his second RBI double of the game, this time scoring junior
Jesse Smoot for a 6-5 lead after seven.
DeSales broke the game open in the eighth scoring eight times on four hits, four walks, and one Scarlet Raider error to take a 14-5 lead and never looked back from there.
Junior
Tyler Cooperman earned his fourth win of the season pitching four solid innings of relief allowing just three hits and one run, striking out two. Junior
Steven Wallace had started, allowing five runs over five innings.
Amato finished 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs, Sweeney dropped in three more hits, scored twice, and had two RBIs, Smoot scored three times, senior
Alec Hardy had two hits and two runs scored, sophomore
Conner Lafferty scored twice, and DePaul had two hits and two RBIs and also stole his 10
th base of the season leaving him just four stolen bases shy of tying the all-time record at DeSales.
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they host Swarthmore College beginning at 4:00 pm at Butz Field.
