Pitching Propels Bulldogs past Swarthmore, 4-3

Center Valley, PA (April 6, 2016) – Freshman Felix Martinez Jr. pitching six strong innings and senior Evan Fraser recorded his third save leading the DeSales University baseball team past Swarthmore College, 4-3, for the Bulldogs third straight win in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

After the Garnet (16-9) opened the game with a solo home run on the first batter of the game Martinez Jr. set down 11 in a row after that allowed just two runs over six innings on three hits, striking out six.

The Bulldogs (12-9) got the run back in the bottom of the first inning when freshman Preston Amato walked, moved to second on a Garnet error, to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI groundout from junior Tommy DePaul.

The score remained tied at one when DSU took the lead for good in the third taking advantage of another Swarthmore error that extended the inning allowing senior Jay Maletz to knock in two runs with an RBI triple giving DSU a 4-1 lead.

Swarthmore got solo runs in the fourth and eighth as senior Chris Polaski did a masterful job pitching out of a second and third, one out jam, holding the one run lead that included a little help from DePaul who ran down a deep fly ball to centerfield with two outs to end the frame.  Fraser worked around two base hits in the ninth to record his third save of the year, and the 12th of his career moving him into third place all-time.

Junior Danny Licamara, sophomore Randal Pacchioli, and freshman Jimmy Johnstone led the eight hit attack with two each in the win.

The Bulldogs are off tomorrow and will return to action on Friday when they host Manhattanville College in the first game of the weekend three-game set beginning at 3:30 pm at Butz Field.
