St. David's, PA (April 23, 2016) – The DeSales University baseball team split a road doubleheader at Eastern University on Saturday afternoon, taking two of three in the weekend series with the Eagles, and clinched a spot in the MAC Freedom Tournament in two weeks.
Game One (W/8-0)
Sophomore
Adam Donovan was outstanding in game one spinning a three-hit shutout, the first shutout of the season for the Bulldogs in the 8-0 win.
DSU (21-13, 12-6 MAC Freedom) scratched out a run in the first inning as junior
Tommy DePaul singled and scored on senior
Alec Hardy's double one batter later.
The score remained 1-0 into the top of the seventh inning when the Bulldogs exploded for seven runs to put the game away. Junior
Jesse Smoot had a two-RBI single, junior
Danny Licamara an RBI double, senior
Chris Rubin an RBI squeeze bunt, and freshman
Tommy Epsaro a three-run homer in the seventh.
Donovan walked just two and struck out five to earn his second win of the year. DePaul finishe 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while sophomore
Conner Lafferty and Licamara each had two hits in the win.
Game Two (L/5-8)
DSU took a 3-0 lead in game two in the fourth inning on a two-RBI single from Licamara and an RBI double from junior
Tyler Sweeney. Senior
Steven Wallace was rolling thru the first five innings looking to equal Donovan's game one performance before he ran into trouble in the sixth.
After two hits and a walk loaded the bases, Wallace got the first out of the inning in the sixth. An error on the next play allowed the first run to score and a single up the middle made it a one run game as senior
Evan Fraser was called on to try and keep it a one-run lead.
Fraser entered with the bases loaded and got the first batter to bounce into a fielder's choice saving a run at home plate but the next five batters all had hits as the Eagles (14-17-3, 7-9 MAC Freedom) plated eight runs, six of which were unearned, to take an 8-3 lead.
DSU did score twice in the top of the seventh inning and had the tying run at the plate but were unable to do anymore damage dropping game two, 8-5.
Wallace took the loss allowing two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings pitched, striking out three. Licamara was the only Bulldog with multiple hits and DePaul scored twice in the loss.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday when they host Immaculata University in a non-conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
